Latrines for the Philippines: Compassion Project Report

19th July 2019 / City

At our 2018 Christmas Party, we raised $3890.79 to build Latrines in the Philippines with Compassion.

The bathrooms are now completed and the reports are in. We have helped 100s of children to have access to clean sanitation facilities that will protect their health and dignity while they grow and learn at the Compassion Centre.

PROJECT IMPACT

This Water and Sanitation project saw the construction of bathrooms across three storeys at Daraga Child Care and Learning Child Development Centre. Each floor is equipped with handwashing basins, showers and toilets. The bathrooms will enable Compassion assisted children to learn important hygiene habits, reducing incidences of waterborne disease and improving the children’s health and wellbeing.

The finished construction includes flushing toilets (with separate areas for male and female), exhaust fans for good ventilation, and an electric water pump and water tank to ensure sufficient water supply. There has been continuous promotion of proper handwashing techniques among the children, and increased awareness on health problems caused by poor sanitation and hygiene practices.

The centre’s new bathroom facilities are now being used by 600 children and adults who attend weekly learning activities, extracurricular activities, seminars, parent meetings, and Sunday church services. The facilities are also available to the wider community, as well the registered children, helping to bring about change on a larger scale.
